Glamour photography is a specific genre of visual art that has traditionally been featured in fashion magazines, advertising campaigns, and the media. Personalized glamour photography has been growing in popularity over the years because people want to capture themselves in the most flattering light. In the philosophical sense, people want to showcase the beauty of both the body and the soul.
Collaboration on a glamour photo shoot is required to capture the essence of the client. The combination of makeup, hairstyle, clothing, accessories, and posing all work together to flatter the subject.
Glamour photography emphasizes the appearance of the client. As stated above, the careful selection of wardrobe, hairstyle, and accessories must work together to be both stylish, sensual, and sophisticated. Note that glamour and vulgarity are not synonymous. Glamour photography is not gratuitous or overly sexualized. A properly composed and photographed glamour image could easily be featured in art galleries or artistic magazines. More often than not, implied nudity is favored over full nudity.
The selection of an exquisite interior goes a long way in achieving the desired result. I like to use locations that are dramatic and colorful…hotels with long windows and bright but diffused light. A forest setting with tall trees and greenery as well as the classic bedroom setting can all be used to capture the essence of the client.
Props are essential. We always consider using different elements that are special to the client. For example, someone who is a big costume player could choose outfits and props they like for their session. Singers can use musical instruments or microphones for their photo session. Our goal is to make you feel special and then capture that feeling in camera.
Post production is a complicated and time consuming process required to produce the desired image. The editing of backgrounds, skin tones, stray hairs, etc. transforms a photograph into artwork. Post production is the most time consuming area of creating the final image.
What kind of poses are effective? Here are several that I find both attractive and effective.
- Have the model laying on her back. This is tricky because a wrong angle or position (photographer) can change the perception or mood of the photograph.
- Have the model lay on her side.
- Have the model play with her hair or use a fan to blow the hair from the front.
- A playful glance over the shoulder. This is a cute and sexy pose that works for everyone.
- Have the model lay on her stomach. This is an easy pose that works for everyone regardless of body style or clothing used.
- Sitting in a chair, on a couch, or on furniture. The piece of furniture is used to highlight the shape of the client.
My style of glamour photography combines traditional, contemporary, and artistic poses and styles to create a look that is unique to each client. Our sessions involve pampering the client with hair, makeup, and wardrobe to ensure clients are comfortable with how they will be captured on film.
Everyone deserves to look and feel like a star; schedule your session and let’s make magic.
